“Just as man cannot live without dreams, he cannot live without hope. If dreams reflect the past, hope summons the future.” - Elie Wiesel
Sometimes I feel like I am solar powered. As the school year comes to an end and my energy is running low I get rejuvenated by summer vacation. The sun, fun and freedom brings me back to life. Sometimes the lack of a schedule takes time to readjust, but that task happens easily for me. Summer is the time when you can sit back and relax while reflecting on life. I know most people think teachers do not work over the summer, but teachers are always working even when they have time off. I find that during my travels I learn so much and that excites me to design essential lessons to share my new knowledge with my students. The time physically out of my classroom makes me feel like a new person. For the summer months the world is both my teacher and my classroom. The countries and experiences I thrive upon help to refresh my mind, body and soul in order to be prepared to see my students and begin another adventure in my classroom when the summer comes to an end and the new school year begins.
This summer I am blessed to visit east Africa [Tanzania], the Middle East [Abu Dhabi, Dubai & Oman] and California [San Francisco, Los Angeles & San Diego]. Along the way I may add a few more destinations to my list, but as of today these are my confirmed adventures. Tomorrow I will depart on my first journey. I feel as though tomorrow is not only Independence Day for our country, but also for myself. The Fourth of July is a federal holiday that commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776 by the Continental Congress declaring that the thirteen colonies regarded themselves as a new nation- The United States of America and no longer part of the British Empire. In modern times the holiday celebrates freedom while reflecting on the past. Much of the celebration is associated with summer, barbecues, family gatherings and fireworks and this is exactly why I can connect with tomorrow's date and my first trip. I may not actually watch fireworks because I will be in the sky on an airplane, but that is what happens to me each time I travel. I feel like an M-80 about to explode with energy and impact others while they watch the show.
I know that I am not like everybody else simply because I do not solely focus on things. Instead my heart yearns for new people, places and experiences. Experiences are greater than things. Those are the items in my life that inspire me to become greater in spirit and live freely. As you know I am in love with the world and the only sound that I want to hear is the heartbeat of the globe under my ear as I lay my head on its chest. I am wanderlust. I have the need to travel and explore. I know it is something that we are born with. We are born with the need to explore and have adventures and when you are born with wanderlust there is constantly adventure in your hearts and something in your mind that just keeps repeating, "GO!"
If you are reading this I hope you will travel and if you already do travel keep doing it because there is just so much to see, experience and explore. Once you are out there you’ll realize that the world has a lot to offer. It is not solely about being a thrill seeker. I believe it is about seeking knowledge and using that knowledge to influence yourself and others.
