"Better In The Dark" is from Dio's "Killing The Dragon" album, played to honor a great man no longer with us. July 16th will be the 7th anniversary of Ronnie James Dio's passing - a reminder of a very dark day for all in the metal community. Regular listeners of the show know I usually play a set of music to commemorate a noted musician's passing, but instead for Ronnie, I'm going to do a two-hour show to celebrate what would have been his 75th birthday. That will be sometime in July so I will keep you posted.
I went deep into the Rush catalog to play "The Trees" - a great track from the "Hemispheres" album, yet followed it up with two solo songs from two of the three members. "My Favorite Headache" is the title track from Geddy Lee's solo album released in 2000 - with a great bass line in the intro! "Promise" is from Alex Lifeson's solo album which was released under the name Victor on Atlantic Records in 1996. His guitar playing is unmistakable, although the album does not sound like Rush at all... Fans should seek it out!
The Ozzy Osbourne one is a rarity. It was originally was recorded with Dweezil Zappa, Donny Osmond and the guys from Extreme and appears on Dweezil's album "Confessions". Yet, Ozzy took the music track and re-recorded his own vocals, and the only way you can get it is on his box set the "Prince of Darkness".
I played "I Forget To Breathe" by Mr. Big (from the album "The Stories We Can Tell") as I am very excited that they will be releasing a new album titled "Defying Gravity" on July 7th. The original band is still together with Billy Sheehan, Paul Gilbert, Eric Martin and Pat Torpey, and is their third album together since their reunion in 2010. Sorry to say, Pat only plays on part of the album as he suffers from Parkinson's Disease, yet drummer Mike Starr, who toured with them in the past, helped them out in the studio. It also is a return their original producer Kevin Elson, who produced their first three albums. Word is that it will have a live feel as the band recorded the album in only six days.
And, in what can be called a new segment of the show, a "then and now' double shot of The Electric Boys; "Psychedelic Eyes" is from their debut album, "Funk-O- Metal Carpet Ride", and "Father Popcorn's Magic Oysters" is from their 2012 album "And the Boys Done Swang". Their latest release, "Startflight United" came out in 2014, but the song I played captures their old style perfectly! Frontman Conny Bloom has released a few solo albums as well.
