Saw an excellent jazz set last night at world class NYC venue, Birdland, as Lenny White (drums), Mike Stern (guitar) , Buster Williams (bass), and underrated sax vet Sonny Fortune (sax) played a set of Miles Davis tunes. And it wasn't a mere birthday tribute show, all four had played with the late, legendary trumpet genius in various decades. Drummer Lenny White ("Bitches Brew" 1970) joined guitarist Mike Stern ("We Want Miles," 1981), bassist Buster Williams ("Directions," 1960s) and alto saxophonist Sonny Fortune ("Big Fun," 1974) and had the post-bop and fusion bases covered in their 75 or so minute sizzling set. With great sound and sight lines, Birdland is a topnotch jazz experience and comes with this jaded jazz afficionado's highest recommendation.
On the subject of music, England's Lulu makes a rare New York appearance this coming Tuesday at BB Kings and speaking of that great venue, the legendary Stax R&B/Funk outfit, The Barkays appear there on June 27 and you'll get my feedback on both right here.
For those who aren't aware from Memorial Day to Labor Day NYC is music paradise with great free shows virtually every day of the week and among the major fests are SummerStage in all 5 boroughs (www.summerstage.org), 3 weeks of the Lincoln Center Out of Doors Fest (http://www.lincolncenter.org/out-of-doors) starting July 26 and including Dionne Warwick in a Burt Bacharach tribute, Metro Tech Brooklyn's BAM R&B Fest every Thursday at Noon for 10 consecutive weeks starting June 8 with the legendary Ramsey Lewis (http://www.bam.org/music/2017/r-and-b-festival-at-metrotech), and Celebrate Brooklyn at Prospect Park (https://www.bricartsmedia.org/events-performances/bric-celebrate-brooklyn-festival) also with world class Artists.
I also highly recommend the Queens Library system for great free programming including concerts and also movies, exercise programs, and a variety of great classes including Yoga, meditation, ESL, Korean, Chinese, and countless others. My late mother taught me that the library is your friend and it most certainly is.
One of my favorite R&B acts in Maxwell is on tour this summer along with the tremendous Ledisi and Leela James making stops at The Prudential Center on June 8 and newly renovated Nassau Coliseum June 10. Maxwell's "Urban Hang Suite" is my favorite Album of the 90's and probably the most romantic album since Marvin Gaye's legendary "Let's Get It On" and "I Want You" albums.
RIP to Gregg Allman. I saw The Allman Brothers headline MSG in the 80s and it's always painful to lose an iconic musician who touched so many lives.

Catch you in a few...and remember to appreciate and thank a veteran this Memorial Day. I produced an award winning indie film years ago ("Theresa Sareo Alive Again") and worked with Wounded Warriors and the sacrifices they made for us are profound.
