I watched social media blowing up with hundreds of tributes and reactions which varied from shock to sadness and even anger in that his death had been ruled a suicide. I posted my own feelings on the Village Connection Radio Blog, so I wanted to pay homage to him just through his music. Of the deep cuts played, the demo version of "Spoonman" appears on the 20th anniversary deluxe edition of "Superunknown". Included within the solo material played, I included three tracks he did for movie soundtracks; "You Know My Name" was for "Casino Royale" and has great Bond feel to it. "Seasons" is from "Singles", a movie which took place in Seattle, and had many other Seattle bands featured on the soundtrack. There is a deluxe version of the album as well with extra tracks. Also, Chris has a cameo in it! The closing song of the show was "The Promise", a haunting song which was featured over the closing credits to the movie of the same name. Being this single was released a few months ago, it is likely the last recorded work we will hear from him. Soundgarden was said to be writing material for their next studio album and may have some finished songs, but they have yet to make a statement. In fact, the official Soundgarden website has yet to be updated.
The Mandatory Maiden track is ripped from the news. “Hallowed Be Thy Name” – a song which appears on the 1982 album “Number Of The Beast” and is a long running staple of their live set - is currently involved in a legal dispute. There is no question that the song features lyrics of a song called “Life’s Shadow” recorded by the band Beckett in the early 70s. Steve Harris was a fan of the band, and Maiden manager Rod Smallwood worked for them long ago, yet this is not about stealing songs or lyrics. As far as Maiden is concerned, they knowingly referenced some of the song and made an agreement with the song’s composer, Robert Barton back when the album came out. According to sources, the current dispute – which has come to surface 35 years later – is between Barton and Brian Quinn, who co-wrote “Life’s Shadow”, along with Barry MacKay who has a share in Quinn’s publishing. Until the matter has been settled, Maiden has dropped the song from their set.
“1992” is the new track from Mr. Big from the forthcoming album "Defying Gravity" which will be out on July 7 via Frontiers Music. The song’s lyrics refer to their 1992 number one hit “To Be With You”, and how it changed the band forever.
"Chasing Dragons" is from the new Adrenaline Mob album “We The People” and was inspired by the tragic epidemic of opioid abuse. Band frontman Russell Allen stated, "Opioid overdose has risen to epidemic proportions in the US. and has tragically affected so many families, including my own. Told from the perspective of death, this song confronts the user and the problem head on. If you or someone you love is suffering from Opioid addiction seek help immediately before it's too late."
We all know Rob Halford as the frontman of Judas Priest, yet he has had a success solo career as well. Between his three projects - Fight, 2wo, and his solo outfit, Halford - he has released eight studio albums and a series of live records outside of Judas Priest, and all of them are being released together in a comprehensive box set. Most fans are aware of Fight and Halford, but the short-lived project 2wo is often forgotten. It was more industrial metal, as it came out in 1998 and that style of music was very popular at the time. Their only album "Voyeurs" featured guitarist John 5 and was produced by Trent Reznor. Listen for the track "Leave Me Alone".
